BOOKS
%Title: AFTER THE STORM: Meek, Jay & F. D. Reeve, eds.
%Descr:
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it--and sadly, the
memory of Desert Storm seems to fade from our collective psychic
landscape. This anthology attempts to capture and reflect on the
lessons the Gulf War--much as did Belinda Subraman's "The Gulf
War: Many Perspectives" collection, and Leslie Scalapino's "O 3"
anthology [see reviews in TRR #1 & #3]. The names here include
many of American poetry's "big guns"--Robert Bly, Amy Clampitt,
Jayne Cortez, Allen Ginsberg, Denise Levertov, William Stafford.
But the tone tends toward strident, occasionally as shrill as an
air-raid siren--empassioned but unlistenable, and ultimately less
human than work in the aforementioned, lesser-known volumes.
Political poetry, with the balance leaning heavy towards the
politics.

%Title: AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CRUSH-FREAKS Volume 1 Issue 1
%Descr: Jeff has taken a minor sexual fetish and raised it to an art
form. A "crush-freak" is a variation on shoe/foot fetishism.
The three basic fantasies are being tiny and then crushed by
a normal-sized woman, the visual image of women steping on
bugs or other small object, and also the obsession with
giant women.
Jeff Vilencia (whose business card reads "Foot Fetishist") has
worked on many films and videos, many of which explore this
theme. He was won some critical attention for his film *Squish*
about women steping on grapes. This book/journal is mostly an
introductory scrapbook of illustrations, stories, letters,
advertisements, and resources for the crush fetishist. An
in-depth and serious undertaking for those sharing the same
interest of those researching variations of sexual obsession.
Tapes and T-shirts available too.

%Title: BAD GIRLS DO IT!: An Encyclopedia of Female Murderers 1993
%Descr: Angel Makers, Black Widows and Baby Butchers--Michael
Newton's book has them all. The bright, colorful cover with
a 50's style "bad girl" is strangely at odds with the
somewhat dry, repetitive, academic prose within. But who
cares--it's a fascinating, absorbing account of over 180
notorious women killers. It's an odd mixture of feminism
and anti-feminism; the vengeful femmes are always framed
against a family backdrop, but many of them clearly rebel
against oppressive marriages and relationships--here,
husbands are a burden and children are roadblocks. Newton
has clearly done his homework, at least in the academic,
detective-work sense; but he doesn't delve into the role
cultural values have played in creating these murderesse's
life situations and stresses. I thirsted for more insight
into these women's minds and emotions, but Newton remains
coolly outside. Nonetheless, it's an excellent book.

%Title: BOB FLANAGAN: SUPERMASOCHIST
%Descr: Bob Flanagan has made a minor name for himself in the body
art circuit most notably with his incredibly hard to obtain
*Fuck Journal* fron Hanuman Books. Leafing through this book
(as I'm sure so many will do) you'll find some of the most
grusomely shocking images of performance S/M ever printed.
It's impossible not to find these images unnerving at first
glance because they're so unfimilar to our psyche (even the
sexually aventurous). Mutiple penis piercings, extreame bondage,
blatent humiliation. When you pick the book up for a second time
and read the interview -- all of a sudden, it all makes perfect
sence. Bob suffers from the rare genetic disorder Cistic Fibrosis
that causes the lungs to constantly fill with thick mucus and
usually results in early premature death. His complex early
medical problems has lead to a predisposition to extreme
masochism. In many way it seems like the heathiest responce to
constant humiliating and painful medical care during his most
formative years. Now as a writer and performace artist, Bob has
raised masochism to an elegant artform. This volume documents his
writings, perfomances, and installations with extensive photos
and interviews for a moving portrait of a very unique person.
A fitting selection for the first volume of Re/Search's new
People Series.

%Title: BRAIN BOOSTERS: Food & drugs that make you smarter
%Descr:
A new book that extensively covers smart drugs from pharmacology,
culture, politics, and application. I really like the equal
treatment given to "natural" substances like vitamins and herbs
as to "sythetic" substances. They also extensively cover the "war
over vitamins" with the current FDA legislation against our
access to natural and useful (and currently legal) substances. I
haven't read the entire book book yet but I'm looking foward to
reading about the use of the various B vitamins, the applications
of nootropics, and the nuts and bolts of brain chemistry.
Extensive resources including a long list of doctors that are
smart-drug-friendly. One of the better books and it's very
current and very complete.

%Title: CORPORAL POLITICS 1992
%Descr: This slim, oversized softcover collects the works that
appeared in an exhibition put on by the MIT List Visual Arts
Center. The artists' creations all deal with fragments of
the human body, because, according to the introductory essay
by Helaine Posner, "the body fragment [is] a highly charged
metaphor for the psychological, social, political, and
physical assaults on the individual." This exhibit was
denied NEA money allegedly because some of the fragmented
body parts are of the type that right wingers wish God had
never given to humans. Robert Gober's *Male and Female
Genital Wallpaper* and Kiki Smith's glass sperm are two good
examples. Like much cutting-edge art, the works in this
collection are hit and miss. Some of the more powerful pieces are
Rona Pondick's *Little Bathers*, which look like tumors with
teeth; Gober's Dadaesque hairy candle; and Smith's *Bloodpool*,
which appears to be an almost fully developed fetus. As always,
David Wojnarowicz's text/photography/acrylic collages cut right
to the bone. Due to the challenging and uneven nature of this
book, I would recommend it mainly to people who are heavily into
edge art. Casual observers may wish to
look elsewhere.

%Title: CRITIFICTION: POSTMODERN ESSAYS
%Descr:
Raymond Federman is a long time practitioner and theorist of
Postmodernist art and thought, whose novels include Double Or
Nothing, Take It Or Leave It, and The Two-Fold Vibration. In
this new book of "Postmodern Essays" , Federman focuses on themes
that have obsessed him throughout his long career, including
Surfiction (a kind of fiction that he himself forwarded in the
seventies), Imagination As Pla{y}giarism, Self-Reflexive
Narrative Devices, The Mainstream Publishing Industry's Inability
To Open Up New Markets That Take Advantage of The Wealth of
Experimental Novels Being Written and, of course, Postmodernism
(it's birth and it's death). Federman tells us toward the end of
this collection that: "I am in the process of burying
Postmodernism [because] Postmodernism is indeed dead, finished:
on one hand because it was swallowed and digested by the economy
and eventually excreted and disseminated into the culture, on the
other hand because it was stifled by academic bickering and
consequently turned into a futile debate." But Federman isn't
crying over the Death of Postmodernism. Nor is he, like
conservative critics whose names I won't utter, ready to yell
"Good Riddance!" Throughout these informal, provocative essays,
Federman celebrates the crazy products of Postmodern Fiction:
works by such writers as Pynchon, Sukenick, Barth, Sorrentino,
Gins, Abish and many others, as well as the one writer who
Federman has spent his entire adult life studying and trying to
make sense of: Samuel Beckett. The Ghost of Beckett and all his
alter-identities (Malloy, Malone, The Unnameable) fills these
pages. Federman goes so far as to say that December 22, 1989,
the day Beckett died, was also the day Postmodernism died.
Whatever Postmodernism is, and I guess we'll talk about it until
the Next Thing works its way into the mainstream culture, anyone
at all interested in getting a candid take on what it could be
should check this book out.

%Title: EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL FRIENDS AND FOES
%Descr: Raw, unrelenting data. There is so much here that anyone
but the most serious UFO researcher is likely to be
overwhelmed by information overload. Many of the threads go
off on some pretty cosmic tangents, so it's easy to get lost
in it all. Here is what I hope to be a simple synopsis.
The civilization from Zeta Reticuli has been influencing and
interfering with terrestrial civilizations for thousands of
years. The Grays, as they are known, made a treaty with the
US government. We would get exotic technologies in exchange
for surplus cattle and citizens. The Grays require certain
fluids from the cattle and certain psychic radiations from
their human abductees to survive. They are also engaged in
a series of genetic experiments to hybridize human and Gray
DNA to colonize this planet. They had a similar treaty with
Hitler, and the concentration camps were a form of factory
farm for the aliens. The Grays have subjegated at least one
other civilization, and the Grays use them for various
oddjobs. Meanwhile, at least four other alien
civilizations, with various states of hostility towards the
Grays, have been visiting Earth, but they take a more "prime
directive" approach to what is here. Currently, the Grays'
"official" base of operations is at Nellis Air Force Base,
north of Las Vegas. This is known as Area 51 and Dreamland.
This is where the Jason Society (the group of 12 people who
*really* run the government) studies the new technology.
There is at least one other "unofficial" alien base, known
as Dulce, located under the Four Corners area. The Jason
Society is considering an attack upon this base. Finally,
our best chance of survival probably rests with the "Aryans"
or "Blondes" - the rather humanoid aliens who might be
related to us. They, however, would rather not get
involved, having barely managed to resist being conquered by
the Grays. Are you still following me? *Everything* is
tied together as part of a cosmic war that has been fought
for millenia. Gemstone is like a game of Diplomacy compared
to this document. Open to pages at random, Bo Gritz, Pan Am
flight 103, the Ayatollah, Watergate, Fatima, This book is
information overload, and not for anyone with a tenacious
grasp on conventional reality.

Nimmo always grabs my attention, and in this collection he starts
with an essay about the death of Samual Beckett, leaps into a
great NO BUDWEISER IN THE LESBIAN ART COLONY bar story, and, in
another essay, talks about being alienated from poets and
poetry. I happen to agree with what he has to say in both the
stories and essays in this collection; and I think that Nimmo's
willingness to put his balls on the cutting board of political
incorrectness shows a decisiveness many writers lack. Nimmo

%Title: FREE I GOT 1993
%Descr: A combination of political and economic philosophy and
stories of life on the road. Mann is always busy thinking
up cheaper, simpler, happier, freer ways in which to live.
It's the sort of book I might write on the road, less the
economic philosophy. I don't care for his attitude about
rape, but I do think he's got lots of good ideas about
simplifying one's lifestyle. Maybe I'm just playing devil's
advocate, but I suspect there are some grittier aspects to
life on the road he's not telling us about--but it works for
him, and he hopes it can work for you. Makes me want to go

%Title: GONE TO CROATAN: Origins of North American Dropout Culture
%Descr: This new book, edited by Ron Sakolosky & James Koehnline is
an overwhelming volume exloring the various histories of
Americans as cultural dropouts. We're not talkin' Timothy
Leary here, we're talkin' early English settlers forsaking
the "Protestant work ethic" and joining up with the ways of
the Indians.
Since Jim Koehnline and the Moorish Church are involved, some
fimilar authors pop up in this collection; Peter Lamborn Wilson,
Thom Metzger, Carlos Cortez, Ron Sakolsky, and Neal Keating.
There's no way I could get through this whole book (it's too damn
long) but I was intrigued by the nomadic Ben Ismael Tribe and how
they resisted urban civilization. The idea of tri-racial
communities seems so unique (probably becasue they've been
censord from our history books) yet they're fully explored here.
This book is filled with censord histories about Amercia's fight
for independence and people's fight for independence from
America.

that are eroticly-charged, as they don't follow the typical porn
formulas. They're stories about people's life and feelings about

%Title: INTO THE BADLANDS
%Descr:
Jerme Spew is part of the San Francisco publishing group that put
the likes of Henry Rollins to shame. These people (the Manic D,
Andromeda, and Synthetic Productions crews) network well, and
carry an edge that most publishers are afraid to touch for fear
of getting injured. In this collection we catch Spew's
obsevations of a world that should have been knocked out of orbit
100 years ago, but continues on in a low budget sci-fi b-flick
reality. We get tales of jail stints, self-administered
abortions, spoken word performances where the audience attacks
the speaker, vivid descriptions of the urinals in the Asby BART
station, and a hundred other evils people lock their doors to
hide from. This isn't easy writing to take, but it is neccesary,
because the world is not, in fact, a pretty place, and closing

%Title: KANJI PICT-O-GRAPHIX: Over 1,000 Japanese Kanji and Kana
Mnemonics
%Descr: The *kanji* of Japan are the complex pictographs imported
from China. Some of the characters are stylized
representations of real stuff and one can see the trees,
rivers and ice in these 'purer' characters. There are also
characters of abstract concepts which are logically
presented in a way easily duplicated with a brush. The real
fun comes with the ideographs and phono-ideographs, they
have two or more pictographs together to create a more
complex idea. Some make sense, like the ideograph for
"firefly" which is comprised of pictographs for "fire" and
"insect". Others are obscure, such as the character for
"lunatic" which is made up of pictographs for "dog" and
"king". I would guess that comes from the mad emperor who,
upon moving the capital to Hirosaki, built numerous temples
to dogs and made everyone in town bow to dogs and address
them as honorable spirits. Other characters provide an
insight into the society of Japan at the time of the
development of the *kanji*: "government" is "roof" and
"buttocks" - the earliest form of the phrase, "Cover your
ass" I'll warrant; "teach" is "piety" and the ubiquitious
ideograph for "strike". Using pictures to teach *kanji* is
not a new idea, but Mr. Rowley has tremendously improved
upon the technique. According to two friends of mine who
teach English in Japan, one from California and one from
Kyushu, most books that use this method have pictures that,
in no way, relate to the shape of the *kanji*, nor are the
pictures consistant, nor do they use enough of their crappy
pictures to illustrate anything beyond a few basic
ideographs. Working from the proper forms of *kanji* and
the phonetic *hiragana* and *katakana* characters, Mr.
Rowley has created a visual vocabulary that is striking and,
most importantly, memorable. My friend Mami said she wished
she had a book like this when learning *kanji* in school.
Rowley's drawings capture the same intellectual spirit that
gave birth to characters that are sometimes humorous, and
sometimes violent. The character for "outside" and "undo"
is comprised of "evening" and "crack", Rowley's drawing is
of a man urinating at night. The mnemonic phrase is "He
wnet *outside* and *undid* his pants when nature called."
The character for "principles" and "ethics" is comprised of
"person" and "order". In the drawing, "order" is rendered
as a government building (it does look like a building with
columns) and the mnemonic phrase is "People in Washington
have big *principles* and few *ethics*." And, in the utmost
bit of irony, the same charcter is used for "rice" and
"America" the mnemonic phrase being, "Japan won't buy
*American* *rice*." Rowley's selection of characters is
interesting, too. He writes, "My *kanji* selections do
include several that are not on the list of *kanji* approved
for general use by the Japanese Ministry of Education. They
are here because they were visually interesting to me. By
the same token, several common *kanji* have been excluded
because frankly I couldn't come up with a satisfactory
mnemonic." _Kanji Pict-O-Graphix_ won't teach you Japanese,
but using it along with whatever you are using will make
learning the written forms much easier. By itself it is an
extremely entertaining and quite insightful book for the
serious and nascent Japanophile.

%Title: LEVE TA JAMBE MON POISSON EST MORT: A Comic Book By Chester
Brown
%Descr: Julie Doucet is one of the fastest rising stars in the
"underground" comics scene. She's gone from producing
self-published minis in 1988 to wining an 1991 Harvey Award
to this, her first book collection, just released in 1993. I
don't know anyone that's been able to score so big so fast,
it even took superstar Peter Bagge about 15 years to really
gain his current popularity. This isn't to say that she
doesn't deserve her current popularity and respect. Quite
the contrary, I've always considered her work both
insightful and funny at the same time. It's amazing how
universally appealing her comics are. Julie has a way
illustrating ideas that are deep in everyone's mind yet no
one wants to talk about them. Her extensive use of nudity
and sex is hard to deny and have a strong power to draw
people in.
Many of these stories I've seen before, but seeing them all
compiled into this one book lets the full power of her ideas come
through. In many ways her ealier work (reprinted here from her
original minicomics) is less autobiographical but it has an
absurdist edge often seen is her more recent work. If you're
already a serious fanboy and have every issue of *Dirty Plotte*
and *Drawn & Quarterly* then just browse through at the book
store for the parts you haven't seen. If you've only seen small
snipits of Julie's work then get this book -- you definetely love

%Title: LOOKING AT DEATH 1993
%Descr: In March and April 1993, Harvard University put on a
photography exhibition with death as the theme. This book
collects over 100 of these photos in a gruesome tour de
force. The black and white photos span 150 years, with just
a few from recent times. No famous images of death are
here--no Viet Cong shooting a prisoner in the head, no Ruby
snuffing Oswald--just a bunch of mostly anonymous people who
left this vale of tears one way or another. "Death by
Violence" is probably the most disturbing section. In it we
see a young couple shot in their car, two children dead from
a gas leak, revolutionaries with their heads lying beside
them, and people who killed themselves by hanging. "Death at
Medical School" is filled with diseased corpses and pickled
fetuses, and
"Remains of Death" looks at skulls, skeletons, and mummies (once
you unwrap their bandages, they ain't too pretty). The book's
most surprisingly haunting images are from the late 1800's, when
families would take pictures of departed members, usually
children, in a way that made it appear that the children were
only sleeping. The most unusual thing about *Looking at Death*
isn't any of the images, but who published it. David R. Godine is
a refined small press better known for *belles lettres* and books
on typography than post mortem pictures.
Support their bold move. Buy this book and take a look at where
all of us are headed.

with the reproductions here bright enought to translate that.

act. Throught the interview we're able to understand his
connections to contemporary conceptual artists.

I just got the other four books in the series: *Auto Body

images of distorted people with humours captions. I liked *Auto

social comentary.
Mostly weird, sometimes funny, and a bit visionary.

%Title: PORNUCOPIA 1993
%Descr: Piers Anthony is the author of several extremely popular
mainstream science fiction and fantasy series including
*Xanth*, *The Apprentice Adept*, and *The Incarnations of
Immortality*. But there is another Anthony that is only
hinted at in the playful T&A of the *Xanth* novels -- it
is this Piers Anthony who wrote *Pornucopia*, an extremely
explicit, over-the-top fantasy novel. Written in the
light-hearted style Anthony is best known for, *Pornucopia*
will nevertheless shock even the most jaded readers. The
plot revolves around Prior Gross, who has an uncircumcised
penis that measures 3.97 inches when erect. As it turns out,
the smegma that Prior's penis produces has curative
properties, and this makes Prior's organ the target of an
underhanded abduction by a beautiful scientist named
Tantamount. The rest of the novel focuses on Prior's attempt
to regain his pilfered gland. Anthony has commented that
when writing this book he tried to break every taboo he could get
his hands on, even those of the erotic publishing industry
itself. Indeed, *Pornucopia* deals with such *verboten* topics as
smegma, V.D., small penis size, bestiality, circumcision, tampon
insertion, and three-pronged prosthetic penises (?!). When
Anthony originally submitted this book to Playboy Press, they
rejected it as "too gross for words."

%Title: PSYCHE SUBVERSION: Underground Writers' Compilation 1992
%Descr: A dense, dramatic little book of underground poetry and
prose, sorta like the tension in the air before a big storm.
It's the grittier side of the city, the downside of a loving
relationship, the freak-out inside the sanity, the dark evil
twisted delusions inside an apparently normal life. It's
what those black-clad, tattooed young people--or those jeans
& sweatshirt, book-in-hand people--prowling the streets of
San Francisco are *really* thinking about, and it's not
always pretty. I especially liked "Receiver" by Camilla Ha;
"The Playground" by Peter Plate, and "Never Told You About
Reno, did I?" by Bucky Sinister. If you've touched the dark
side of city life, this book's for you. Recommended.

%Title: QUEER BLOOD: The Secret AIDS Genocide Plot 1993
%Descr: There exists a marginalized but persistent group of people
who say that AIDS is an artificially-created virus that was
introduced into the human population. One of the foremost
members of this group is Dr. Alan Cantwell, who has just
published his third book on the topic, *Queer Blood*.
Cantwell argues that AIDS was purposely introduced into
humans in order to obliterate the gay male population, as
well as African Americans. When I started this book, I was
prepared for a meticulously-researched argument for this
theory. Instead, I found *Queer Blood* to be more of an
essay, and at times a rant. Information was presented in a
disjointed manner, leaving me confused about several issues.
Namely, exactly how was the AIDS virus engineered? How did
its creators know it would affect gays but not hets? And how
was it supposed to decimate the African American population
if it was intended mainly
for gay men? Cantwell does so a good job, though, of showing that
the Department of Defense was apparently working in 1969 on
developing a virus that would cause AIDS. He also points out the
flaws (and racism) in the offical explanation of the origin and
spread of AIDS. Although this book doesn't cohere as a unit, it
does make many interesting points. Dr. Cantwell's theories simply
cannot be ignored, so I would recommend either getting this book
or writing to Aries Rising Press for
info about Dr. Cantwell's previous books on AIDS as biowarfare.

%Title: ROJARO INDEX Issue 1 1992
%Descr: Kjetil has undertaken what seems like the most overwhelming
research project ever. He's produced an annual index of
every referance to every musical performer in every music
magazine on earth. Or at least came damn close.
Four huge volumes, at about 300 pages each making a referance
volume larger then most dictionaries -- almost completely on his
own. The first volume has the title index (300 pages) listing all
the album titles cross referenced with the artist so they can be
looked up in the main index. It also has the list of promotional
cassets, CDs, and flexis that were distributed with the music
fanzines. There's even a 34-page magazine list that reads like a
condensed version of *Factsheet Five's* music zine listing. Once
you get past that first volume there's still the three remaining
volumes of alphabetical listing of musicians and groups with all
the mentioned they've recieved in all the magazines. Looking up
"Fugazi" you'll find the articles written about them in nine
different magazines (including MRR #104), the nine live show
reviews, and reviews of five different recordings (including 11
diferent reviews of *Steady Diet of Nothing*). This reference set
could easily be one of the most interesting things I've recieved
in the mail since I resarted *F5* (and I get a lot of mail).
There's plans to produce a 1993 edition but after that it depends
entirely on the responce the volume gets.
He's looking for donations from other music zinesters and will
offer a discounted price for those that help him out. The
individual price is Nkr 765 -- that's Norigian Krowns.

%Title: SENSUOUS MAGIC: A Guide for Adventurous Couples 1993
%Descr: Pat Califia is the most visible spokeperson for lesbian
sadomasochism. Her book *Lesbian S/M Safety Manual* is
required reading for the leather dyke set, and her short
story collection *Macho Sluts* destroyed not only society's
taboos, but also the taboos within lesbian erotica. Her
latest book, *Sensual Magic*, is part manifesto, part
psychological profile, and part nuts and bolts manual. It is
directed at couples of any orientation who want to get into
S/M but don't really know what to do. In a very relaxed
conversational style, Califia effortlessly weaves
together sections on communicating wants and needs, tying up your
partner, tickling, applying pressure, delivering blows, etc.
along with sections on the reasons for participating in S/M, the
psychology of S/M scenes, safety precautions, anal and oral sex,
and more. The end of the book contains a glossary, an annotated
bibliography, and a resource guide for clubs, classes, videos,
etc.
This helpful, nonthreatening book is highly recommended to
couples who are craving a sexual flavor besides vanilla.

%Title: SOWKINS
%Descr:
There are writers who entertain, and writers that grab you deep
in your emotional gut and bring out feelings you didn't even know
you were capable of. Denise does both, and in her new book
SOWKINS you get tossed into an honest portrayal of emotional
threads being torn apart one string at a time, often bringing one
to the brink of an abyss so dark and lonely that survival itself
is questioned. There are too many stories, too many insights,
too many whiplashed emotions to capture in a review. This is
simply one of the best thing I have read this year, and I can say
with all honesty that I am jealous of Denise' s ability to

%Title: SPEED/KENTUCKY HAM 1993
%Descr: Although William S. Burroughs has been read by almost every
subversive on earth, the books of the late William S.
Burroughs *Jr.* aren't nearly as well known. Luckily for us,
Overlook Press has reprinted Bill Jr.'s two books, *Speed*
and *Kentucky Ham*, and combined them into one volume. Like
his dad, Bill Jr. had a -- shall we say -- eventful life in
which drugs played a big role. *Speed* tells of Little Bill
running away from his grandparents' home to New York, where
he became addicted to -- you guessed it -- speed, got
arrested twice (and was bailed out by Allen Ginsberg), and
eventually returned home.
In *Kentucky Ham*, Bill Jr. is arrested for forging a
prescription and is sentenced to detox at a Federal Narcotics
Farm. Bill Jr. has a wonderfully informal writing style. You feel
like he's sitting next to you just talking about all the shit
he's been through. His two books, especially *Kentucky Ham*, make
you wish you had known the guy.
This one-volume collection would be worth having if only because
it was written by William Burroughs' son, but it's more than a
literary curiosity -- it's two powerful, painfully honest books
that stand on their own merit.

Continuing in the tradition of Bukowski, Carver, and Locklin,
Kurt Nimmo tells you point blank what his world is like. It's
pure survival based on gut feelings, and this collection of short
stories lets you know that Kurt is alive and well and ready to go
another round. Many of the characters in Nimmo's world would
look like losers to some folks, but I think of them as survivors.
These are people with scars so deep suicide appears to be an
option; addictions to writing where a computer comes closer to
being a lover than any lover had ever been; tales of cancer and
death, sexual fears and longing, and so many other truths you
want to grab the phone, dial Nimmo up, and reassure him that
things will be OK.

%Title: TALES OF TIMES SQUARE: By Josh Alan Friedman 1993
%Descr:
Josh Alan Friedman takes on Times Square in a series of
journalistic profiles of the places and people that make up "The
Deuce." It's not the Gray Line tour -- Friedman peers into the
sex emporia that glut the area and comes up with stories of
poigancy and humor. His writing is tightly controlled, modulated
between the opposite poles of porn fandom and journalistic
integrity. The women he writes about, like Raven de la Croix and
Long Jean Silver, come off complex, quirky, fully drawn. He also
checks in on longtime Times Square denizens like Fay Gold, who
has lived in the area since she was a child in the early 1900s.
There's a real history to this book, Times Square the way it was
in its heyday and how it got to be the way it is now. It's a rich
collection, recommended to anyone who's ever spent time in New
York. This Feral House reprint also sports a handsome cover
illustration by the author's brother, cartoonist Drew Friedman.

%Descr: Whips, rubber body suits, corsettes, six-inch high heels,
fishnet stockings--welcome to *Skin Two*, the lushest, most
well-produced S/M magazine ever put out by a pack of pervs.
Started in 1982 by people in the scene for people in the
scene, *Skin Two* has become phenomenally successful. Here,
then, we have a collection of the best articles to have
appeared so far. Tim Burton talks about his use of fetish
imagery in *Batman Returns*, Pat Califia defends lesbian S/M
against attackers, and others tell us about the bondage art
film *Mano Destra*, the ideal mistress, S/M clubs worldwide,
S/M and British law, Betty Page, safe S/M, and other topics
that reflect *Skin Two's* eclectic focus on art,
politics, psychology, and hard-edged advice. The book's biggest
drawback is that it is all text--none of the magazine's trademark
beautiful photography is included.
Of course when you realize that *Skin Two* sells for $20 an
issue, getting this collection of articles for thirteen bucks is
a steal.

%Title: THE JUST INTONATION PRIMER: An introduction to the theory and
practice
%Descr: of just intonation Volume 7 Issue 1
Just Intonation is a system of musical tuning that emphaises
whole-number ratios. Unlike the commonly used equal
temperment, Just Intonation is not tied to a particular
scale and can provide a greater variety of consonances.
American composer Harry Partch is frequently associated with
popularizing Just Intonation.
This book is extensive enought to be associted with Partch's
*Genesis of a Music* as important works in the field of Just
Intonation. David combined musical theory and the physics of
music to make a signifigant work useful for any student of music.
He started with explaining the basics of psychoacoustics,
harmonic scales, and pitch intervals. He then explains how to use
pythagorean math and musical notation to create structure for
Just Intonation. This isn't an overwhelming work but one would
need at least some background in music (or an intense desire) to
get throught the bulk of this book.

%Title: THE MAGAZINE NETWORK: The trend of alternative art in the light
of
%Descr: their periodicals
An impressive work, both in conception and execution. Originally
published in Hugarian, Geza compiled a modern history (1968-1988)
of mail art publications and networking from around the world.
The beauty of the book is that it's written from a purely person
perspective but it's still intensely historical and accurate. All
the major players and movements are extensively documented for an
exciting drama of activity. He explores the origins of rubber
stamping, photocopy art, mail art, collage, neoism, and the art
strike. Reading this work makes me realize the connections and
separations between networking culture and the zine world. A huge
bibliography of books and magazines are also included making this
an excellent resource for anyone interested in furter research.
My only complaint is that the magazine listings don't include
complete adresses for easy contacting. A vital and valuable work
but stunted by limited production and distribution. You may want
to contact them about availabilty before sending any money.

This exciting new collection of writings by Samuel R. Delany
is chock full of sweet nuggets of gossip and stories of
early 60's New York bohemian life. I was surprised to get
this from Masquerade. Nothing against Masquerade books, it
just looks like something that would come from the ultra-hip
Citatel Underground Books.
One of the drawback of runing this moster of a magazine is that
there's no way I could find the time to read a 500-page book such
as this. I still have Ed Sander's *Tales of Beatnik Glory*
sitting on my bookshelf, yet unread. I love browsing through this
book check out tales of Bob Dylan performing in half empty
churches, the grimy streets of the East Village, struggles to get
stories printed, bizare Allan Kaprow "happenings," and working as
a bookstore clerk. Though there's not much sex in it, that should
dissuade someone from picking up this book. If you're a big
Delany fan or into books with true stories of bohemian life check
